Using meta-materials, passive microwave components have been designed. First, spurious radiations of patch antenna are suppressed by band-stop characteristic of split ring resonators (SRRs). The SRRs can be characterized with negative permeability and positive permittivity around the resonance frequency and, thus, wave cannot propagate. To eliminate the first and second spurious radiations, the design equations of band stop filter using SRRs are suggested. The reflection coefficient and far-field radiation pattern of patch antenna with SRRs are obtained by full-wave simulation and measurements. Second, an asymmetrical backward directional coupler with complete coupling and broadband composed of conventional microstrip and one-dimensional mushroom structure is proposed. One-dimensional mushroom structure is utilized for double negative transmission line. The performance of the coupler is verified by full-wave simulation and measurement. The proposed coupler achieves a coupling of -1dB with a fractional bandwidth of 27% and a high directivity of 25dB.
