In this talk, we consider timeliness and DVS-based energy optimization in battery-powered, dynamic, mobile embedded real-time systems, which must remain functional during an operation (or mission) with a bounded energy budget. Dynamic real-time systems operate in environments with run-time uncertainties including those on application activity execution times and arrival patterns. We consider activities that are subject to time/utility function (TUF) time constraints, statistical assurance requirements on timeliness behavior, and a non-exhaustible energy budget. A TUF specifies the utility to the system resulting from the completion of an application activity as a function of its completion time. TUFs provide a vocabulary that reveals the spectrum of time constraints, of which classical deadlines are a special case.
We discuss how to optimize timeliness and system-level energy consumption behaviors by dynamically (i.e., at run-time) constructing CPU schedules and scaling CPU voltage and frequency, with polynomial-time costs. We show how such schedule construction and frequency scaling can meet statistical timing requirements, energy budgets, and mutual exclusion constraints (on non-CPU resources), while heuristically maximizing accrued timeliness utility and minimizing energy consumption. We also discuss experimental studies using simulations on DVS-enabled processor models and implementations on RTOSes to validate analytical results and to understand tradeoffs.
