In this talk we present a series of optimization problems which arise in wireless communication. One series of problems concerns the design of filters on the transmitted and received signal to minimize the maximum error rate of the network, while taking into account quality of service constraints. Another series of problems concerns the design of training signals to obtain the best estimate for a communication channel. These fundamental problems in wireless communication lead to fundamental problems in mathematics and linear algebra including Weyl''s multiplicative majorization conditions relating the eigenvalues and singular values of a matrix.
