7. 내용요약 :

Blood flow throughout the body is maintained by the heart constantly pumping the blood through a complex network of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins. There are four valves in the heart that open and close at the appropriate times in the cardiac cycle that ensures that the blood flows in one direction. These valves undergo complex motion through a cardiac cycle and the leaflets are subjected to relatively large mechanical stresses particularly during the opening and closing phases of the cardiac cycle. Computational simulations can be effectively used to analyze the complex valve dynamics and such an analysis can help in the causes for the diseases of the valves, in the design of artificial valves to replace severely diseased valves, and in the development of engineered tissue heart valves. The current status of the dynamic simulations of heart valves will be reviewed and future developments in this area will be discussed.
